Jazzmobile has played a major role in the renaissance of Jazz. The organization has been involved in providing the impetus for Jazz programs and in particular arts in education. Jazzmobile has influenced the vitality of the music beyond its New York base, serving as a paradigm of similar organizations and institutions across the country and throughout the world.
The vitality of the music today is a testament to what a passionate, faithful few have accomplished not withstanding past disinterest and neglect. It is an affirmation to the power of Jazz to inspire that kind of devotion. Jazzmobile former board member the late Dizzy Gillespie once remarked that “People have died for this music,” and added with his customary dry wit. “You can't get more serious than that.” Jazzmobile and those who have shared its vision and assisted in the mission to bring Jazz to the people have given their lives to this music. They have done so, because the music has given so much to them.
As new technology continues to widen the parameters for Jazz and new vehicles for reaching audiences around the globe are being discovered, Jazzmobile will take advantage of these opportunities to keep alive and strengthen the heritage of this unique American form.
The Board of Director and I, as Chairman, welcome the challenge of providing the leadership and direction that will enable Jazzmobile to grow and prevail as the vanguard Jazz organization.
Jazzmobile is a multifaceted, pragmatic outreach organization committed to bringing “America's Classical Music--Jazz--to the largest possible audience. Jazzmobile produces concerts, festivals and special events on a worldwide basis. Over the past 3 decades it has become the standard by which other Jazz organizations are measured. The Jazzmobile educational efforts are now being enhanced by the creation of a not-for-profit music publishing company and not-for-profit recording company.
Jazzmobile is proud of its special and unique contributions to culture and education and grateful for the support it has received from both government and private sector sources. Today, as always, we are dedicated to the concept of bringing important and meaningful musical experiences directly to the large and varied audiences we have developed over the years.
Using our new headquarters as a center, we are currently developing new programs and reconstructing our existing programs in order to better serve our growing constituency.
I feel very strongly that every effort ought to be made to retain that which was/and is good in our culture and it's incumbent upon all of us to pass on our factual history and accumulated knowledge and skills to the young. Providing these very important and necessary educational/cultural opportunities to all who want to know, is what Jazzmobile is about.
Jazzmobile has earned the trust and respect of the people, artist and non-artist alike, and has provided dynamic leadership as a progressive arts organization. Jazzmobile is the vanguard organization specifically in the preservation, presentation and propagation of Jazz--America's Classical Music.
Jazzmobile, Inc. is a public, not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) arts and educational institution founded in 1964 by Dr. Billy Taylor. As the pioneer organization designed for the preservation and propagation of Jazz, America's Classical Music, it is committed to creative expression through all forms of the arts. Jazzmobile is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors whose Chairman is Dr. George Butler, former Senior Vice President/Executive Producer at Sony Music/Columbia Records.
