Bassist & composer Iris Ornig is one of the most original female voices on today's New York jazz scene. Since her arrival in New York City in 2003, she had played with an amazing roster of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians in NYC including Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Frahm, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Rodriguez, Rebecca Martin, Allison Miller, Sachal Vasandani, Helen Sung, Marcus Gimore, Dan Tepfer and many others.
Ornig’s new project THE IO-5 highlights all the members – Dan Pratt on sax, David Smith on trumpet, Daisuke Abe on guitar and Ronen Itzik on drums- in a mixed program of straight ahead and contemporary jazz originals and well-chosen pop covers. Ornig’s compositions are strikingly fresh, original and of the moment.
Her latest CD, “No Restrictions”, features Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Rodriguez, Helen Sung and Marcus Gilmore. The recording has earned extremely positive reviews from Jazziz, All About Jazz, and The New York City Jazz Record, just to name a few. ‘No Restrictions” was recognized in Downbeat magazine as one of the best album of 2013.
“…Ornig’s own tunes evidence the attraction to modern pop music. ‘Gate 29’ has Rodriguez virtually singing an infectiously cool melody reminiscent of the likes of ‘Radiohead’, while ‘We shall meet beyond the River’ soars with raw, confessional emotion.” – Downbeat (Shaun Brady 4 Stars)
“…’No Restrictions’ is a mature, distinctive and captivating disc. It’s the elegant work of an exceptional artist at the height of her powers.” –Jazziz (Hryar Attarian)
“...This well-put-together CD (produced by Ornig) can only increase Ornig’s visibility on the jazz scene as a fresh instrumentalist and composer.’ - The New York City Jazz Record (Marcia Hillman)
“... A bass player that knows how to lead and give everyone room to strut their stuff, Ornig serves up a wonderful set that really delivers the goods throughout.” - Midwest Record (Chris Spector)
Iris Ornig is a gifted instrumentalist, a talented composer and a charismatic performer.
