Mission Statement

The JDG seeks to spread the love of Jazz Music to new generations by providing supplemental jazz education clinics to school-age children at no cost.

What We Do

The JDG provides presentations that last between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the school’s needs and student availability. Demonstrations are given in a concert-like program revolving around repertoire performance. Students are encouraged to participate in the performances at several junctures in the Presentation. The performing ensemble works to outline the Art of Improvisation and the ways in which creativity is used on a daily basis outside of the arts. The Presentation consists of five key components: jazz history, performance of three to five musical selections, instrument role demonstrations, student handouts and instructional assistance. Jazz history is placed at the core of every Presentation. Emphasis is placed on the origins of jazz music and the similarities that society we live in today has with the basic elements of jazz music. Students are shown the roots of jazz music. They are shown that jazz is a melting pot for all music genres. The Ensemble then explains how jazz originated from African rhythm and melody brought by the slave trade in Africa and was then mixed with western European harmony in America. Students are then instructed on how western European harmony mixed with those African elements formed what eventually became the blues, the basis of all jazz forms.
