Alva Nelson is a multi-faceted musician who performs and creates music that is diverse, sophisticated and exhilarating. Nelson has performed with Lightnin’ Hopkins, Kirk Whalum, David “Fathead” Newman, Arnett Cobb, Odetta, The Boys’ Choir of Harlem and Chuck Jackson. The son of a Texas Pentecostal minister, Nelson was an integral part of the now legendary 1970’s Kashmere Stage Band of Houston. This high school band, led by Conrad O. Johnson was crowned “Best High School Jazz Band” in the nation in 1972. The Band made many stellar recordings in the 1970’s, that many industry pundits thought were professional efforts. (See the Showtime documentary, “THUNDERSOUL”). Alva has been musical director for many regional theatre productions including “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill”. Mr. Nelson’s latest CD offering is entitled “Soul Eyes”, a collection of jazz standards and original compositions presented in a virtuosic display of melodic & harmonic creativity with dazzling improvisation, in solo, duo, trio & quartet forms.
