The piece carefully melds multi-cultural and multi-ethnic elements from zapateo (tap) dance, modern choreography and the masked tradition of Son de los Diablos from Peru. A high-energy execution of African rhythms from coastal Perú constitutes the centerpiece of the performance. The musicians and dancers use the quijada (jaw-bone of a donkey), the Peruvian cajón (box drum) and the choreography includes passages of zapateo dancing in performance.

This landmark engagement brings together Peru's top dancers with The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, Arturo O'Farrill and members of The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in a re-imagination of the Son de Los Diablos tradition.

(note – ALJO members are Vince Cherico, drums, Rafi Malkiel, trombone, and Larry Bustamante, baritone sax.)
